Belarusian Food - Draniki



Draniki is a belarusian shallow fried potato pancakes made of grated potatoes. It is a traditional belarusian dish which is still very popular in today's Belarus.

Ingredients for 2 servings:


5 Large potatoes
1 Egg
1 medium Onion
0.5 teaspoon of black pepper


Salt to taste
7 to 8 tableteaspoon of sunflower oil
Grater

Instructions:

1) Peel potatoes and onion.

2) Grate potatoes and onions into a bowl.



3) Add salt, pepper and egg,then mix together. (The substance should not be liquid, and should not be too thick, drain excess potato juice or add some flour to achieve required level of liquidity.)



4) Heat the frying pan and pour 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil onto it.



5) Dump a full tablespoon of mixture from the bowl onto the frying pan and from a small about quarter inch thick pancake. Cook on high for 2 to 3 minutes and then flip over.

6) Cook another 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown.

7) Serve hot with sour cream.

Belarusian Food - Beef stew in a pot

Most belarusian dishes were cooked in a wooden stove using ceramic pots. It is still a popular way to prepare and serve food in modern Belarusian Cuisine. Various kind of stews can be prepared this way, here is one of the commonly used recipes.To prepare this dish you need a ceramic pot which is called "Harshok" in belarus.
Ingredients for 2 servings:


1/2 lb beef
4 potatoes
1/2 lb mushrooms
1 Onion
2 to 3 tablespoon of sour cream
1/2 tea spoon of balck pepper
Garlic to taste
Salt to taste
Sunflower oil


Instructions:


1) Peel the potatoes, onion and garlic.


2) Cut the beef to pieces.


3) Put cut beef in a bowl.


4) Add crashed garlic, salt and pepper .


5) Mix together.


6) Heat the frying pan,then pour 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil onto it and add meat.


7) Cook on high for 2 to 3 minutes and then flip over.


8) Cook another side 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown.


9) Cut the mushrooms to pieces.


10) Heat another frying pan, pour 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil onto it.


11) Add the mushrooms and cook on high for 3 to 5 minutes stirring occasionally.


12) Mince the onion.


13) Add salt and minced onion to the mushrooms and cook on high for another 1 to 2 minutes stirring occasionally.


14) Cut the potatoes to 1/2 inch thick pieces.


15) Put beef in the pot.


16) Lay out the cut potatoes over the beef and add salt and water. [Water should cover the potatoes]


17) Add the mushrooms.


18) Top off with the sour cream.


19) Turn on an oven and put the pot in it.


20)Cook for 2 hours on medium heat.


21)You can eat it directly from the pot or serve on a plate.

Belarusian Food - Beef and Cheese Casserole


This is not a traditional Belarusian dish,but it is part of Soviet Cuisine. It is also known as "Meat French Style". It is usually served on occasions.
Ingredients for 2 servings:
1Lb of beef

1 Onion

1/2 Cup grated cheese

0.5 tea spoon of black pepper

Crushed Garlic to taste

Salt to taste

1 tablespoon of Sunflower oil

3 tablespoon of Mayonaise


Instructions:


1) Peel the onion and the garlic.


2) Cut the beef to pieces.


3) Put the beef pieces into a bowl.


4) Add crashed garlic,salt and pepper into the bowl.


5) Mix together.


6) Add sunflower oil and lay out the beef on the baking tray.


7) Mince the onion.


8) Add the minced onion to the beef.


9) Grate the cheese and put it on top of the beef and the minced onion.

10) Add mayonaise.


11) Put everything into the oven and cook for 2 hours on medium heat.


12) You can serve with mashed potatoes, french fries, pasta or rice

Belarusian Food - Apple Pie


To make this pie you need a vital ingredient: apples of "antonovka" variety which grow in about any belarusian orchard.
Ingredients for 4 servings:
5 Apples
3 Eggs
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of flour
1 tablespoon of sunflower oil

Instructions:

1) Core and slice the apples.Try to do the size of the slices even about 1 inch long.

2) Break the eggs into a mixing bowl.

3) Beat the eggs with sugar using a mixer.

4) Gradually add flour to the mixture and continue whipping.

5) Pour one tablespoon of sunflower oil onto the baking tray.

6) Pour mixture onto the apples [Please don't mix],let it stay for a few minutes so dough penetrates down to the bottom of the tray.

7) Put the tray into the oven and bake it for 1 hour on medium heat.
